<<7>> Hi, I'm Dr. Brannick Riggs,
<<8>> Vice President of Education at doTERRA International,
<<11>> and I'm here with our amazing Scientific
<<13>> and Medical Education Committee here in Europe,
<<15>> to have a conversation today about
<<17>> the Turmeric Dual Chamber Capsules,
<<19>> and how they are different from maybe some other products
<<22>> that might be on the market,
<<23>> and how they might be helpful for us.
<<25>> Before we dive into those specifically,
<<29>> Ruth, let's talk about the origin of turmeric
<<32>> and can you tell us more about its benefits
<<36>> and where it comes from?
<<37>> Yeah, well, I mean, I first came across turmeric
<<38>> from looking at Ayurvedic practises
<<41>> and Ayurvedic practises being or Ayurveda being one
<<43>> of the most ancient medical practises you know,
<<46>> in the world.
<<47>> Mostly around India,
<<49>> Right.
<<50>> and the sort of habits that are in India.
<<52>> The root comes from India.
<<54>> That's its most wide usage.
<<56>> And there is, you know, there have been,
<<59>> so it's used in Ayurvedic practises for balancing all sorts
<<62>> of different parts of the body.
<<64>> But it's also
<<65>> thought to be very supportive of the digestive system,
<<70>> it's a good antioxidant,
<<71>> supportive of healthy inflammation.
<<74>> Yeah.
<<75>> It's, you know,
<<76>> a central part of Ayurvedic medicine,
<<78>> and you'll find people using it for all sorts of things.
<<81>> Well, a little bit more
<<83>> on the history there, it's been studied
<<86>> in more than a thousand human clinical trials.
<<88>> - Yes, yes. - Yeah.
<<89>> More than 10,000 publications,
<<92>> so it's a very well-researched
<<95>> - natural ingredient. - That's true.
<<96>> - Yeah, absolutely. - Yeah, absolutely.
<<97>> Because likely it's been used
<<99>> for thousands upon thousands
<<100>> - of years. - Absolutely.
<<101>> We really wanted to know,
<<102>> "what are the benefits
<<103>> and application for this?"
<<104>> Yes.
<<105>> So science has taken a real hard look at this.
<<108>> Yeah.
<<109>> So when looking
<<110>> at the single Turmeric Dual Chamber Capsule,
<<113>> there's one that's clear and then one that's golden.
<<117>> Right, so what, why is that?
<<120>> Why do we have a golden capsule and then a clear capsule?
<<123>> Yeah, that's because we have a capsule in a capsule.
<<126>> Yeah.
<<126>> That's totally amazing.
<<127>> So we have two different things
<<130>> in these two different capsules.
<<132>> So we have, in the first capsule, we have the turmeric oil.
<<135>> And in the second capsule, inside this first capsule,
<<139>> we have the turmeric powder.
<<143>> And these capsules are amazing because they are special.
<<148>> If we would like to protect these ingredients,
<<154>> then we need capsules that let these ingredients in
<<157>> our intestine and that these ingredients only are released
<<163>> in our intestine and for this delayed release,
<<168>> we need a protection.
<<169>> And these capsules can protect these ingredients
<<173>> in a healthy way.
<<174>> They are special HPMC capsules,
<<178>> so they are plant-based,
<<181>> so also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
<<186>> And it has a special cross-linking,
<<190>> it's a cross-linking plant cellulose.
<<192>> And because of that, the releasing time is later.
<<197>> So, and the body has to work with two capsules,
<<203>> and because of that
<<204>> both of them are in the intestine when they are released.
<<207>> We can't say especially on this point, because it depends
<<212>> on how much acid you have in your stomach and also
<<218>> in the beginning of your intestine, your small intestine,
<<220>> and also your microbiome, and also what you eat before.
<<224>> So a lot of things depends where, but we have
<<228>> the opportunity that all the ingredients go in this part,
<<232>> we would like to have them that they get
<<235>> safely in our bloodstream and can support our body.
<<240>> So this is similar
<<241>> to our PB Assist technology in that dual-chambers, right?
<<245>> And the reasoning
<<246>> for that being in two different capsules for sure.
<<249>> So Alex, can you explain the extraction methods of
<<254>> creating that Turmeric Dual Chamber Capsule?
<<257>> Tell us about the extraction methods for that.
<<259>> Yeah, so you've heard there's two,
<<260>> really two different types of compounds,
<<262>> both coming from the turmeric root;
<<264>> turmeric oil and turmeric powder extract.
<<266>> One with turmerones, the other with the curcuminoids.
<<270>> The turmeric essential oil is extracted
<<271>> through a distillation process, which is the most
<<274>> common way that essential oils are extracted from plants.
<<277>> And then the curcuminoids, curcumin, desmethoxycurcumin,
<<282>> bisdemethoxycurcumin are extracted with a solvent.
<<287>> So you have an ethanol, which is a polar solvent
<<290>> and it will go and surround these polar compounds
<<292>> which polyphenols are polar.
<<295>> And so the curcuminoids are polar
<<296>> and when you extract with a solvent,
<<299>> then it surrounds these polyphenolic compounds
<<301>> it's able to extract them from the plants
<<303>> and then the solvent can be evaporated off, and you're left
<<306>> with these beneficial extracts from turmeric.
<<311>> - So you get the whole value. - Yeah.
<<313>> The wonderful thing about this is that the,
<<315>> the sort of the Ayurvedic use
<<316>> and the traditional use comes from both of these areas.
<<319>> You can't get them through one process.
<<322>> You need two completely different processes to
<<324>> get the whole benefits.
<<327>> We take them from one,
<<328>> we get the actives, and we put them back together in one.
<<332>> - Yeah. - Right.
<<332>> I think it's because, you know, I don't know,
<<335>> as you get people that will just munch
<<336>> on a turmeric root to get the whole plant at
<<338>> one time, it's gonna be a little bit powerful.
<<341>> It's a great lunch.
<<342>> And a little bit fibrous!
<<344>> - And stains everything. - Right, right.
<<346>> It stains absolutely everything.
<<347>> This is actually a beautiful way to
<<348>> get the whole plant, the whole root,
<<351>> but getting it within that capsule, for sure.
<<354>> You mentioned polar; polar for those molecules
<<357>> is a positive charge on one end,
<<359>> a negative charge on the other,
<<360>> and having polarity affects the system a little bit.
<<363>> So yeah, I think that's important.
<<365>> So, Fernando, how many drops
<<368>> of the Turmeric essential oil do you find
<<370>> within that outer capsule?
<<372>> Because doTERRA made it with a pattern,
<<375>> so it's about two drops.
<<377>> - Two drops. - Eight milligrams.
<<379>> Great ratio with the amount
<<381>> of the turmeric powder that you find on the inside, right?
<<386>> There's an important thing that we ought to talk
<<388>> about here, which is how do you get the benefit
<<391>> of those turmerones and the curcuminoids?
<<394>> Because we know
<<395>> that curcuminoids are difficult for us to absorb, right?
<<398>> They're fairly large molecules.
<<400>> We don't do well at absorbing those,
<<402>> but the turmerones actually have some benefit
<<407>> for us with that,
<<408>> which is why we've put these two together.
<<409>> Alex, do you wanna talk a little bit about that?
<<411>> Yeah, there's a particular type
<<412>> of cell in the intestine, like they're
<<414>> absorption models that are used in research
<<417>> these Caco-2 cells, and they're able to
<<420>> establish that the Turmeric essential oil,
<<424>> this lipophilic oil, is aiding in the uptake
<<428>> in the intestines of these polyphenolic curcuminoids.
<<431>> So even though they're amazing compounds,
<<434>> curcumin is not well absorbed, right?
<<437>> And so by delivering it with the turmeric oil,
<<440>> we get a much higher absorption and uptake.
<<443>> So we get the benefits from turmeric.
<<445>> Yeah.
<<446>> I think the research tells us it's actually
<<447>> 11 times more of that absorption when we have the turmerones
<<452>> assisting in that uptake of the curcuminoids.
<<455>> Yes, in blood levels.
<<456>> And you've mentioned Ruth, earlier, the fact
<<458>> that those are the powerhouse molecules,
<<460>> Exactly.
<<461>> that give us some of those benefits supporting
<<462>> the digestive tract, supporting a healthy inflammatory
<<465>> response, being antioxidative for the cell.
<<467>> So this really becomes for many a daily product
<<472>> to be using to support the systems.
<<474>> We know that in Ayurvedic medicine as well as in
<<477>> common lifestyle within India,
<<480>> common lifestyle within India,
<<481>> - this is taken every day, - Yes.
<<483>> in their food.
<<485>> We don't typically have that culture here in Europe.
<<488>> And so this actually becomes a way for us to get some
<<491>> of those benefits
<<492>> while not having turmeric in all of our food.
<<495>> Not getting yellow all over our house and all over our
<<497>> - kitchen side. - For sure, for sure.
<<499>> So, the Turmeric Dual Caps
<<502>> I think are a great addition to our supplement line.
<<506>> They're extremely helpful.
<<508>> It can be taken up to three times a day internally
<<511>> and is a fantastic product to be bringing
<<514>> to our market here in Europe.
<<515>> So thank you
<<516>> for joining me today,
<<517>> and having this discussion about the Turmeric Dual Caps.
