<<11>> we went for a long long period of time

<<13>> with no resources and when i mean no

<<15>> resources i mean no resources

<<18>> people told us we were crazy to go all

<<21>> in

<<22>> you know is this really going to work

<<26>> i think some of the most beautiful

<<27>> things can emerge through trial and

<<30>> through difficult times

<<32>> i had been a physician for a long period

<<34>> of time and i'd had a patient who came

<<37>> to see me and they would ask me dr hill

<<40>> what do you think about the essential

<<42>> oils and i made the mistake one time of

<<44>> saying

<<45>> i think that's one of the craziest

<<47>> things i've ever heard

<<49>> she looked me right in the eye and she

<<51>> said i am so disappointed to hear that

<<54>> because that's done more for me than you

<<56>> or any of your colleagues or anyone has

<<58>> ever done for me

<<60>> and it intrigued me

<<62>> and over time i became more intrigued i

<<65>> became involved with essential oils

<<68>> and now for the last several decades

<<71>> this is all that i have focused on and

<<73>> all that i have done

<<75>> i remember when i first came into the

<<76>> essential oil industry i thought they

<<78>> were voodoo oils i thought they were

<<79>> really really strange

<<81>> it wasn't long before i started using

<<83>> oils on my kids and i was amazed

<<86>> at what i was able to do and how it

<<88>> empowered me as a mom to take charge of

<<90>> my family's healthcare

<<93>> so i was a huge skeptic

<<95>> parents were educators my father was a

<<96>> professor of physics so i just wasn't

<<100>> raised anything but allopathic western

<<103>> medicine i learned over the years how

<<105>> effective they they were and can be

<<108>> especially if they're pure

<<110>> when you make a claim that your product

<<113>> is 100 pure and you don't know that it's

<<116>> 100 pure that's an integrity problem

<<120>> i sort of made this conscientious

<<123>> decision you have to as a human

<<126>> recognize that you have an obligation to

<<131>> help and to serve other people

<<134>> after working 10 years in the essential

<<136>> oil industry i found myself

<<138>> leaving

<<139>> for integrity purposes because i knew

<<142>> that essential oils had to be pure

<<145>> the desire of my heart was just to go

<<146>> home and raise my children i've tried

<<149>> all the essential oils out there

<<151>> there's nothing that meets the quality

<<153>> standards our family needs to use for

<<156>> our health care

<<159>> and it was in that moment that i knew

<<161>> stop thinking with your head

<<163>> and start thinking with your heart

<<165>> it all came together and i had such a

<<168>> grand vision

<<169>> of going out and finding the world's

<<171>> most pure most potent essential oils and

<<174>> educating mothers like me

<<177>> how to take charge of their health care

<<179>> so it was in that moment before fear

<<181>> took over that i picked up the phone and

<<184>> i called dave

<<185>> and emily wright called me at the time

<<188>> and

<<188>> just said

<<190>> what if we could go out and source the

<<191>> most pure essential oils on the planet

<<194>> and bring them to the world in a

<<196>> mainstream fashion

<<198>> and he got really emotional

<<200>> and dave doesn't get emotional

<<204>> and actually it was that right then and

<<206>> there that was the genesis

<<207>> for me and i i just kind of felt

<<210>> strongly like

<<211>> yeah we're gonna start a company

<<215>> so i hung up the phone with dave i

<<217>> picked up the phone and i called dr hill

<<220>> and as i called him

<<221>> i still remember he kind of giggled

<<224>> and i said doc this isn't funny

<<227>> i'm serious about this what if we could

<<230>> go out and find these pure oils like

<<233>> we've always wanted to do

<<235>> and what if we could educate people to

<<237>> really understand the power behind these

<<239>> oils

<<240>> and he said no emily i'm not laughing

<<242>> because i think your idea is crazy

<<245>> i'm laughing because i was just getting

<<248>> ready to call you

<<249>> and ask you the very same question it

<<252>> started with an initial little small

<<254>> meeting in an italian restaurant

<<257>> in the far corner

<<258>> and we met for five and a half hours

<<261>> until they finally kicked us out of the

<<263>> restaurant because we weren't buying

<<264>> food anymore

<<265>> and we just started to dream

<<270>> we would meet anywhere we could find

<<272>> some space to meet and it was in some

<<274>> strange places of course the the

<<276>> basement of normal library was one we

<<278>> got too rambunctious and they finally

<<280>> kicked us out of the library

<<282>> sometimes it was in the basement of our

<<284>> homes

<<285>> i remember

<<286>> not telling my kids you know that i was

<<289>> unemployed and starting a new thing but

<<292>> the dad was working on a project in the

<<294>> basement

<<295>> as i did the business plan i started to

<<298>> realize that this was going to be big

<<301>> i just knew that

<<303>> with such a good team and product that

<<307>> had changed our lives we felt like this

<<310>> was going to be significant so as we

<<313>> began in the spring of 2008

<<316>> that's when we had a massive

<<318>> falling out with housing market in the

<<320>> united states and there's a lot of panic

<<323>> and a lot of fear

<<325>> we looked at starting this company the

<<327>> first thing you think is uh i got to

<<329>> raise money i've got to get capital and

<<331>> we we set out to do that initially and i

<<334>> actually ended up the four of us back in

<<337>> new york city visiting with some very

<<340>> high profile people and as we gathered

<<342>> together that next morning in that

<<344>> conference table and we've got you know

<<346>> all of these manhattan style managers

<<349>> that are meeting with us and they

<<350>> quizzed us for hours

<<352>> finally at the end of the day they

<<354>> looked at us and they said

<<356>> we believe that your business model is

<<359>> going to work we believe that you will

<<361>> be successful and we want to fund your

<<363>> venture

<<364>> we'll give you five million dollars

<<367>> and we all of course felt extremely

<<371>> elated

<<373>> they were willing to fund the company

<<375>> but of course they they were interested

<<376>> in 51 percent

<<379>> and control

<<381>> i just remember the feeling we had as we

<<383>> walked away from that conference table

<<387>> and the four of us found ourselves in

<<388>> front of the statue of liberty and i

<<391>> remember looking across the water

<<393>> almost as if on cue as i recall we all

<<396>> just grew somewhat silent

<<400>> and as we looked out over the water

<<402>> i looked at the statue of liberty and

<<404>> what rung true to me is

<<406>> we're doing this to give people freedom

<<409>> and if we take their money

<<412>> we can't make people free

<<414>> and we can't make this dream that we

<<415>> have a reality because they'll never

<<418>> allow us to bring the quality of

<<420>> essential oils that we know we have to

<<422>> have

<<423>> to light because they'll be looking for

<<425>> an exit strategy they'll be looking for

<<427>> a return on their investment and that

<<429>> can't be part of the equation

<<432>> i remember standing right next to dave

<<433>> sterling and dave

<<435>> looked at me in kind of a

<<438>> somewhat shocking way he asked me how

<<441>> much money do you have doc

<<443>> and i said i don't know

<<445>> he said how much can you pull together

<<448>> and i said i don't know and he asked

<<450>> each one of us in succession and before

<<453>> we left the park that afternoon

<<455>> [Music]

<<457>> we had made the decision that we were

<<459>> unable to take any resources from

<<461>> anybody and instead

<<463>> we would all leverage everything we have

<<466>> we took the equity out of our homes we

<<469>> cashed out 401ks we liquidated

<<471>> everything we owned in order for this

<<474>> dream to come to fruition

<<477>> and so as i expressed this to my wife i

<<479>> i remember very clearly

<<481>> she just looked at me and said well i

<<484>> trust you

<<485>> you'll take care of us

<<488>> and we'll be fine

<<490>> and we had family members even come to

<<492>> us to say you're foolish your family is

<<496>> going to be homeless

<<498>> so we went all in

<<499>> everything we didn't hold anything back

<<503>> we thought it would be for just a couple

<<504>> of months that we went without any

<<506>> income but it was 13 months those final

<<509>> months i mean we're eating almonds and

<<512>> yogurt and

<<513>> telling our kids they can't go to dance

<<515>> practice and they can't play sports

<<517>> because we don't have enough money

<<520>> but having that belief

<<522>> that it was all going to be worth it

<<526>> and i remember a day

<<528>> we had five thousand dollars left in our

<<530>> account

<<531>> five thousand dollars because we just

<<533>> put together

<<534>> this big oil order

<<536>> and we didn't know how we're going to

<<537>> make payroll we didn't know how we were

<<539>> going to make commissions

<<540>> [Music]

<<541>> and just to see how

<<544>> doors open

<<545>> every single time as long as we continue

<<547>> to step forward

<<549>> the door is open

<<554>> people ask me sometimes you know how how

<<557>> are you guys able to do what you did

<<560>> and you know but everybody rolled their

<<561>> sleeves up and we did every job we did

<<563>> this job this job this job

<<566>> i was supposed to go out and find these

<<569>> precious oils

<<571>> so i started calling people every single

<<574>> person would say of course our oils are

<<576>> 100

<<577>> pure and that's when i realized almost

<<579>> all essential oils that are sold out

<<581>> there sold through brokers

<<583>> these brokers were very smart people

<<585>> often having very sophisticated labs and

<<588>> the oils were almost always

<<590>> changed

<<591>> most were not pure most were

<<593>> synthetically created i had probably 100

<<597>> plus different samples that have been

<<599>> sent to my home

<<601>> and every time we would meet you know

<<602>> dave dr hill would say emily have you

<<606>> have you found the oils yet i'd have to

<<608>> say

<<609>> not yet like are we going down the right

<<612>> path is this really what we're supposed

<<613>> to do

<<615>> i remember

<<616>> one beautiful day i opened up my

<<619>> doorstep and five oils showed up all in

<<621>> the same day

<<622>> it was frankincense lavender tea tree

<<626>> lemon and peppermint as i smelled these

<<628>> bottles i called up dave and i called up

<<631>> dr hill and i said

<<633>> i found the oils

<<636>> i brought my camera because that was

<<638>> going to be a moment that i wanted to

<<641>> capture and we pulled the lid off and

<<643>> smelled it we were confident that these

<<646>> were the purest oils on the planet i

<<649>> remember that first discussion we had we

<<652>> talked about the culture of the company

<<655>> what type of soul do we want doterra to

<<658>> have

<<659>> and we realized that these oils are

<<660>> experiential

<<662>> and we realized it had to be a

<<664>> person-to-person model we had to bring

<<666>> people together

<<668>> we've got to have a culture of giving

<<670>> back we have to have a culture of caring

<<673>> locking arms with the people who are

<<675>> putting the seeds in the ground who are

<<677>> harvesting these products

<<679>> it's making sure that their needs are

<<680>> met

<<682>> as i look back on it today with doterra

<<684>> it's

<<685>> it's it's overwhelming to me

<<688>> to see the impact it is around the world

<<692>> there's a lot of sacrifice but again

<<694>> those are days we look back on

<<697>> you know with some pride

<<699>> sacrifice

<<700>> is a really important

<<702>> piece

<<706>> today we've empowered nearly 8 million

<<708>> families all around the globe

<<711>> we're now filling 315 000 bottles of oil

<<715>> every single day

<<718>> and just to think about it on that scale

<<720>> just warms my heart knowing that every

<<722>> single bottle

<<723>> is changing somebody's life

<<726>> on both sides of the bottle

<<730>> believe every single person in this

<<732>> world needs essential oils essential

<<734>> oils are the great equalizer

<<737>> we have single-handedly

<<740>> changed the acceptance of essential oils

<<742>> in science and in medicine

<<745>> we are so committed to this work we are

<<747>> so humbled to be

<<750>> stewards of what nature has created so

<<756>> amazing employees for all of our amazing

<<767>> haven't changed in our purpose we're

<<769>> still true to those things that very

<<772>> early on were important if doing the

<<775>> right thing was important then doing the

<<777>> right thing is important now if helping

<<779>> and giving service to other people was

<<781>> important then it's important now if

<<784>> sourcing oils differently

<<786>> and doing what had not been done before

<<788>> was important then it's important now

<<795>> as crazy as it sounds
