<<5>> Hi, I am Ruth Dempsey, and
today I am here to talk to you

<<8>> about the dōTERRA Lifestyle
and Wellness Chart.

<<11>> I'm a PhD scientist
specialising in studying

<<14>> how our lifestyle choices
impact our health,

<<17>> and so I love the clarity

<<19>> that the dōTERRA
Wellness Chart brings

<<21>> with respect to lifestyle
options and impact.

<<25>> The chart has six elements

<<27>> from the ground up described
as nutrition and digestion,

<<31>> movement and metabolism,
rest and managing stress,

<<36>> reducing toxicity,
informed self-care,

<<40>> and proactive
medical care.

<<43>> As a scientist
interested in lifestyle,

<<45>> I am going to focus on the first
four elements of this chart

<<49>> as these are the ones that
are fully lifestyle-based.

<<52>> The latter two can be considered
more about healthcare,

<<56>> but I think as
you will see,

<<58>> the more focused we are on
managing these first four layers,

<<62>> the less we will
need to think

<<63>> about the healthcare elements.

<<66>> I think that the chart is
the perfect analogy for this

<<69>> in so far that
the more you take care

<<71>> of the foundational steps,

<<73>> the better your health
and wellness will be

<<75>> and the less
you will need to do

<<77>> for the top
two healthcare levels.

<<81>> So let's start with the foundation,
nutrition and digestion.

<<86>> Good nutrition is probably
the most important thing

<<89>> that anyone can do
to protect your health,

<<92>> but it is often neglected

<<94>> because many look
for convenience foods,

<<96>> eat too little or too much,

<<98>> or with inadequate
balance of nutrients.

<<101>> Fundamentally, nutritional
health is maintained

<<104>> when nutrient intake meets
the body's requirements.

<<108>> For example, for energy,
exercise, growth,

<<111>> organ and
tissue function.

<<113>> It's important
to note that

<<114>> everyone will have
different nutritional needs

<<117>> depending on many factors,
including age, physical activity,

<<122>> the need to manage
external stresses,

<<124>> and many other elements.

<<127>> A balanced mixture of lots of
different sources of nutrition

<<131>> is at the base of this,

<<132>> including using fresh
ingredients whenever possible,

<<136>> but it is also often
not sufficient, sadly,

<<139>> because modern
agricultural practices,

<<142>> the depletion
of soil quality,

<<144>> long-term storage and
transportation of our food

<<147>> leads to much depleted nutrient
quality for many foods.

<<151>> This is why supplementation
with products

<<154>> like dōTERRA's Lifelong
Vitality supplements

<<156>> can be so important along
with a good healthy diet

<<160>> in supporting a balanced
nutrient intake across the board.

<<165>> And of course, we need a
good, sound dietary intake

<<168>> to support the next
layer of the chart,

<<170>> that is healthy exercise,
movement, and metabolism.

<<175>> There is a wealth
of scientific literature

<<177>> on the benefits
of exercise

<<179>> for almost all
aspects of health.

<<181>> For several decades,

<<183>> this has led to
rather prescriptive advice

<<185>> particularly aimed
at the modern Western

<<187>> office-bound
lifestyle

<<189>> to get people
moving more.

<<192>> Much of this related

<<193>> to a minimum amount of daily
cardiovascular exercise

<<197>> with suggestions
such as a minimum

<<198>> of 20 minutes
of brisk walking

<<200>> or three times of intense

<<202>> cardiovascular training
per week, et cetera.

<<205>> More recent
evidence indicates

<<207>> that often such
advice backfires

<<210>> because it doesn't account

<<211>> for individual differences
in desires or needs.

<<215>> So the current advice, thankfully,

<<217>> is simply to find ways
that you enjoy exercise

<<221>> that encourage you to implement
daily exercise routines

<<225>> that you will maintain.

<<227>> And of course, there are a
range of dōTERRA products

<<229>> that can support
you for your exercise,

<<231>> be it through
the Deep Blue range

<<232>> to support and soothe you
through those aches and pains

<<235>> of new exercise routines

<<237>> or perhaps the oils to
support a daily yoga routine

<<240>> or simply to make your
chosen exercise space

<<243>> smell attractive
and tempting.

<<245>> And of course,

<<246>> supporting how our body
metabolises the nutrients we need

<<249>> to support our
exercise routines

<<251>> is at the essence of the
dōTERRA MetaPWR range.

<<255>> Moving up the chart leads
us to managing stress

<<258>> and getting sound
and sufficient sleep.

<<261>> And this is perhaps one of the
most complicated to manage.

<<265>> Of course, if we
have good nutrition

<<268>> and if we are
exercising optimally,

<<270>> these will help a lot to manage
stress and help good sleep,

<<273>> but it's often
not enough.

<<276>> It's also
important to note

<<277>> that these two elements,
stress and sleep,

<<280>> are inextricably linked.

<<283>> Reducing stress will certainly
help with sleep patterns,

<<287>> but equally getting sound
sleep and enough of it

<<290>> is essential to
managing stress.

<<293>> Most of the
research these days

<<295>> is pointing towards how
mindfulness practices,

<<298>> such as meditation
and breath work,

<<300>> can help for both
of these aspects.

<<302>> And I love much of the
research that has been done

<<305>> on the Japanese practice of
shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing,

<<309>> to counter many
of the physiological

<<310>> and psychological
impacts of stress.

<<312>> It's also interesting
to see research

<<314>> showing how healthy relationships
and supportive communities

<<317>> can help to reduce stress

<<319>> and lead to healthier
and even longer lives.

<<322>> There are, of course, a
host of essential oils,

<<324>> such as Lavender and
many of the tree oils,

<<327>> which have been
seen to be at the roots

<<328>> of the benefits of forest bathing

<<331>> and that have been
shown to be helpful

<<332>> both for sleep and stress,

<<335>> which leads me to the last

<<337>> of the lifestyle elements of
the chart, reducing toxicity.

<<342>> All of us
are exposed

<<343>> to numerous sources of
toxins all the time,

<<346>> and in general,
our body can manage those

<<349>> provided, of course, it has
all the nutritional resources

<<352>> to support the necessary
functional processes

<<355>> to manage toxic
exposure in the body.

<<358>> But there is a great deal
of concern these days

<<361>> about the overall
burden that pollution

<<363>> and synthetic chemical
exposures have on public health,

<<367>> and it is more
and more common

<<369>> to find our natural
detoxifying processes

<<371>> can't quite cope with the
burdens put upon them.

<<375>> We can't completely
avoid such exposures,

<<378>> but we can do
things to reduce them,

<<381>> most notably by the use
of simple natural products

<<384>> in just sufficient
amounts to be effective.

<<387>> Substituting aggressive
chemicals and cleaning products

<<390>> for natural products using
essential oils, for example.

<<393>> Equally, substituting
synthetic chemicals

<<395>> in perfumes or
skincare products.

<<398>> Every little bit
will help undoubtedly,

<<401>> and the more we do and
the better balanced we are

<<404>> in all these four
layers of the chart,

<<406>> the more benefits
we are likely to feel,

<<408>> and most
significantly,

<<410>> the fewer times
we will need to resort

<<412>> to either the healthcare
elements of the chart,

<<414>> including limiting the needs
to manage informed self-care

<<418>> and even more by
reducing the occasions

<<421>> where we need to seek professional
help for medical support.
