<<2>> My name is Russ Osguthorpe.

<<3>> I'm the chief medical officer for doTERRA International

<<6>> and I'm joined today by Tim Valentiner.

<<9>> Tim, good to be with you.

<<11>> Great to be here.

<<11>> Thanks so much.

<<13>> We're here because we are excited to discuss a

<<16>> partnership

<<17>> that doTERRA has formed with RIFM.

<<19>> RIFM stands for the Research Institute for Fragrance

<<22>> Materials.

<<24>> When you came to me and talked with me about RFIM

<<26>> I became pretty excited,

<<28>> because the research institute is doing cutting edge research

<<34>> on safety and efficacy

<<35>> of both fragrance materials and now essential oils.

<<40>> So they call them, as we've talked earlier, natural

<<42>> complex substances.

<<44>> Initially RIFM has been focused almost entirely

<<48>> on looking at single molecules that make up a

<<51>> fragrance compound,

<<52>> and they do tons of research.

<<54>> Their scientists are world renowned.

<<56>> They have an incredible scientific board

<<58>> that manages and chooses the scientific projects they're

<<61>> looking at.

<<62>> These folks have looked very carefully at individual

<<64>> molecules for safety.

<<66>> I think one other thing too that's been exciting and

<<69>> interesting about this

<<70>> is that historically RIFM has been comprised of academics,

<<76>> scientists

<<78>> that are on the board,

<<79>> but also there is a scientific advisory board for RIFM.

<<83>> The typical members of this are the producers that produce

<<88>> essential oils

<<88>> but also isolate different molecules,

<<91>> large frame flavor and fragrance houses that are

<<94>> developing very sophisticated synthetic molecules,

<<98>> but then also on the consumer end,

<<100>> large companies like L'Oreal, like Estée Lauder, Unilever,

<<103>> Procter and Gamble.

<<106>> These large industry companies that are some of the

<<109>> primary users of fragrance materials for all of their

<<112>> different products

<<114>> is the typical member of RIFM.

<<117>> But where we're different,

<<120>> and this actually required board approval on an

<<123>> exceptional basis,

<<125>> we were very proud that it was actually approved unanimously

<<130>> to have doTERRA join as a member organization of RIFM,

<<134>> as the only, the first and the only,

<<136>> aromatherapy company that has been invited to participate

<<139>> in this.

<<140>> And it is because of our commitment,

<<143>> our pursuit of purity, of pure and natural complex essential

<<147>> oils by themselves

<<148>> and using these in different applications as

<<151>> complex substances.

<<152>> But also you and your team have just done an amazing job

<<156>> and the plan for moving forward,

<<158>> of really helping to continue our pursuit of scientific

<<163>> validation and evidence

<<165>> but also research and peer reviewed studies

<<167>> to document what people feel and understand and experience,

<<172>> maybe anecdotally but also through cause and effect,

<<177>> but trying to now really put some robust scientific research

<<180>> behind this

<<181>> and help doTERRA take essential oil understanding, safety, and

<<185>> efficacy to the next level.

<<186>> And this is what RIFM was so excited about, what we could

<<190>> bring to the table.

<<190>> And we in turn obviously are extremely excited to be able to

<<194>> partner with them.

<<195>> One of the things I'm also excited about

<<197>> is the scientists at RIFM will be collaborating with

<<199>> scientists at doTERRA

<<201>> to further our understanding of natural complex substances i.e.

<<205>> essential oils.

<<206>> This collaboration will allow scientists that have spent most

<<210>> of their career looking at single molecules

<<212>> at RIFM to broaden their horizons

<<214>> as our scientists have a lot of experience looking at

<<217>> whole oils.

<<218>> And as well will allow our scientists to broaden their

<<222>> horizons

<<223>> looking very carefully at how these individual molecules

<<227>> affect us.

<<228>> And the scientific methods used to study these essential oils

<<232>> will become now part of our repertoire,

<<234>> which will be very important to doTERRA moving forward.

<<237>> So Russ, maybe just as an example

<<240>> what they are looking at typically, is say that

<<244>> molecule 1,8-cineole in isolation.

<<247>> They are doing safety research on that individual molecule,

<<251>> either naturally derived or synthetically derived.

<<254>> And then they base all of their research and studies and safety

<<258>> and understandings

<<259>> on that molecule isolate by itself.

<<262>> But then you have to take that and try to

<<264>> extrapolate all of the essential oil's natural

<<268>> complex substances,

<<269>> like Eucalyptus, for example, that contain a high level

<<272>> of 1,8-cineole.

<<274>> Trying to say everything that happens to 1,8-cineole in

<<278>> isolation

<<279>> therefore must happen to all the oils that

<<281>> contain 1,8-cineole.

<<282>> And that, of course, is too broad of an extrapolation.

<<288>> And they know that, and we know that.

<<289>> There's just been this vacuum of scientific data around

<<294>> substances like essential oils,

<<296>> which are natural substances which are very complex in their

<<299>> chemistry

<<300>> in that they have many compounds that are found within

<<304>> them

<<305>> that act together in the body to affect all sorts of systems.

<<309>> And this is something that we-

<<311>> doTERRA's been built upon this foundation, right?

<<314>> That essential oils, as natural complex substances,

<<319>> are amazing and their properties are incredible

<<323>> and surpass even these individual molecules in

<<326>> isolation.

<<326>> But trying to scientifically validate,

<<329>> document this through peer reviewed studies

<<332>> and research takes a lot of time, a significant amount

<<335>> of resources and efforts.

<<337>> But everyone is invested and interested in understanding

<<340>> this better.

<<341>> Science is about collaboration.

<<343>> And in all honesty, the most exciting part of this

<<348>> partnership

<<349>> is our ability to further our understanding of essential oil

<<353>> efficacy and safety

<<354>> through partnership and collaboration with RIFM.

<<357>> It will be a wonderful partnership over the years

<<359>> that we look forward to fostering.
