<<0>> - When we first started doTERRA,

<<2>> We did it for a number of reasons

<<4>> One of those reasons, of course, was to embrace these gifts

<<9>> of the earth, these essential oils,

<<10>> and to integrate them into people's lives

<<13>> And, another reason, of course, is we wanted

<<15>> to bring together this wonderful world

<<19>> of humanity that we have

<<21>> and bring together these harvesters and these distillers

<<25>> and to be able to benefit people

<<29>> with these essential oils from all around the world

<<31>> But, you know maybe if I look at it and think

<<34>> about the most important thing that we had

<<37>> in mind, is we really wanted to change the world

<<41>> and we really wanted to make a difference,

<<43>> and we really wanted to, frankly,

<<45>> to make some great memories, and I think we have

<<48>> I think there's been some wonderful things

<<51>> that have happened over the years in that regard.

<<54>> I'm troubled by the global trends

<<57>> of incivility and polarization

<<59>> that seem to be happening in our world.

<<62>> It's unprecedented, it seems,

<<64>> this breakdown that's been happening among people

<<69>> and just losing the ability to be civil with one another.

<<73>> There's been this increase dehumanization

<<75>> that's been happening, and this almost disgust

<<79>> with those that don't share maybe our views

<<84>> Some days, it feels like the only thing

<<87>> that we can agree on is that we can't agree on anything

<<92>> Public discourse has broken down

<<96>> We feel that everywhere panelists

<<99>> on TV are screaming at each other sometimes

<<101>> We go online, we find community and connection,

<<104>> and we end up leaving, feeling angry and alienated

<<109>> And many of you have experienced this

<<111>> I'm gonna talk a little bit about echo chambers

<<114>> We all live in our echo chambers, don't we?

<<117>> And social media can help

<<119>> to fuel this psychological polarization

<<123>> We are bombarded with information

<<126>> that confirms our own views, that reinforces our biases,

<<130>> that makes us feel like we belong to something maybe

<<135>> And, I hope that all of you understand this

<<139>> and we all realize this,

<<140>> that social media is programmed to feed us more

<<145>> and more of whatever we show interest in,

<<148>> and then it continues to feed,

<<150>> and it is an ecosystem that just entrenches us further,

<<154>> and further, and further,

<<155>> and to where we become very absolute in our views.

<<160>> We stop compromising

<<163>> That becomes something of a dirty word

<<166>> I'd like to share with you a little bit more about some

<<170>> of the strong things that happen in our world today

<<174>> I want to share with you some of doTERRA's positions

<<178>> We are all raised differently, aren't we?

<<180>> We are all different in our educational backgrounds.

<<183>> We are all different in our value systems, perhaps.

<<186>> We are all different in our cultures.

<<188>> We are different in our beliefs.

<<189>> My own family, even in my marriage, we differ in our views

<<195>> and we have to work these things out

<<198>> But collectively though, we need your help

<<202>> and we need your help in keeping doTERRA as a haven

<<207>> And so just remember that people are good,

<<211>> that our peers in our essential oil world are good parents,

<<217>> they're essential oil lovers,

<<220>> they're engaged in humanitarian and charitable service

<<225>> We never wanna forget this

<<229>> You need to avoid those views

<<231>> where people will start to dehumanize one another,

<<236>> Now I want to share with you what to me is one

<<239>> of the most important stories,

<<240>> one of the most important events that typifies this

<<244>> that's happened in the history, I think, of the world

<<245>> I think it was unprecedented before or after,

<<249>> and this was during World War One

<<251>> It is called the Christmas Truce.

<<255>> In a book that was written by David Stratman,

<<258>> he shared a little bit about this story,

<<260>> and I wanna share it with you

<<262>> It was December 25th, Christmas, 1914,

<<266>> only five months into World War One

<<268>> Germany or German, British, and French soldiers,

<<272>> already sick and tired of the senseless killing,

<<276>> disobeyed their superiors, fraternised with the enemy

<<281>> along two-thirds of the entire Western Front

<<284>> A crime that was punishable by death in times of war

<<288>> Well, German troops held Christmas trees up

<<292>> out of the trenches, reading things like Merry Christmas

<<297>> and you no shoot, we no shoot

<<300>> Thousands of troops streamed across no man's land,

<<304>> strewn with rotting corpses at the time

<<307>> They sang Christmas carols

<<309>> They exchanged photographs of loved ones back home

<<312>> They shared rations, they played football.

<<315>> They even roasted some pigs

<<317>> Soldiers embraced men, that they had been trying

<<320>> to kill just a few short hours before

<<324>> They agreed to warn each other

<<327>> if the top brass forced them to fire their weapons

<<330>> and said that they would aim high

<<334>> Well, a shutter ran through the high command on both sides,

<<340>> Here was a disaster in the making,

<<342>> soldiers declaring their brotherhood

<<345>> with each other and refusing to fight

<<348>> Generals on both sides declared this spontaneous peacemaking

<<352>> to be treasonous,

<<357>> and people were subject to be court martialed.

<<359>> By March, 1915,

<<362>> the fraternisation movement had been eradicated

<<365>> and the killing machine was put back into full operation

<<368>> It took them two months to get that done,

<<372>> They had to literally remove the men on both sides,

<<376>> send them elsewhere, bring other soldiers back in

<<380>> to get the war going again,

<<383>> By the time the armistice was signed in 1918,

<<386>> 15 million more would be slaughtered.

<<389>> Not many people have heard about the story

<<392>> of the Christmas Truce,

<<394>> Christmas Truce story goes against most

<<397>> of what we have been taught about people today,

<<400>> It gives us a glimpse of the world

<<402>> as we wish it could be and says,

<<406>> This really happened once,

<<408>> It reminds us of those thoughts

<<409>> that we keep hidden away out of range of the television,

<<413>> the newspaper, computers, phones,

<<416>> and stories that tell us how trivial and mean human life is,

<<421>> It's like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true

<<426>> and that the world could be different,

<<429>> How many of you have felt that way?

<<431>> Evil can only be defeated by kindness.

<<435>> Now, you can be disgusted with a group of people

<<439>> and then you meet a particular person

<<441>> and you genuinely discover that they are great,

<<445>> that they are lovely,

<<446>> and then gradually, those chips start to fall away

<<450>> and they change our thinking,

<<453>> Now, just a couple of final thoughts here

<<457>> The number one way to combat dehumanization

<<461>> is also frustratingly challenging

<<465>> It is one of the hardest things to accomplish,

<<468>> We simply need to get to know people

<<470>> who are different from us,

<<472>> Just as we have the mental capacity to dehumanize,

<<476>> We are also equipped with the facility,

<<479>> the mental facilities, to forge trust and understanding.

<<483>> It is up to us to change this

<<486>> We have some cleanup to do,

<<489>> We have some cleanup to do within doTERRA,

<<490>> We have some cleanup to hopefully do

<<493>> with the massive numbers we have around the world,

<<495>> and maybe we can help,

<<496>> Number one, never make posts in your online communities

<<500>> that can be interpreted by others

<<503>> as divisive, intolerant, or mean-spirited.

<<508>> Be a speaker of peace

<<511>> Second challenge, this is a biggie,

<<514>> and that is that you make friends

<<517>> with at least three people who you profoundly disagree with

<<523>> Remember something as you do this,

<<525>> Empathy is not endorsement

<<529>> Empathizing with someone that you profoundly disagree with

<<533>> does not suddenly compromise your own deeply-held beliefs

<<537>> and endorse theirs,

<<540>> but it will be an amazing experience for you,

<<543>> Now, third challenge.

<<545>> Make doTERRA a haven of peace, trust, and hope,

<<550>> We're an essential oil company, aren't we?

<<552>> Well, we are, but every bit as much of that,

<<555>> we also are a community,

<<558>> and we are a haven of peace, trust, and hope.

<<561>> So in conclusion,

<<563>> doTERRA has been an amazing education for me,

<<566>> as I know it has been for many of you

<<569>> Many views have softened or changed.

<<572>> I know many of my views have softened or changed.

<<575>> We need to set out

<<578>> and realise that there are different views,

<<581>> We need to realise that we have a lot more

<<583>> in common with people than we have indifference.

<<589>> Now, doTERRA has a unique product. We love the product,

<<593>> We love the essential oils. They're powerful.

<<596>> There are amazing things coming in this next year,

<<601>> but let's not forget maybe our most important product

<<604>> and that is the community that we bring with doTERRA,

<<609>> the community that we build,

<<611>> the belonging that we bring in others,

<<613>> the hope that we restore,

<<615>> the purpose that we help provide in other people's lives.
