<<6>> Hi, I'm Abby Stopher.

<<8>> I am the Senior Product Marketing Manager

<<10>> for doTERRA Europe,

<<12>> and today I am joined by Dr Fernando Guerra

<<16>> and Dr Alexandra Nitsche.

<<18>> Hello. Hello.

<<19>> Hello. Hello.

<<20>> Both are members

<<21>> of our Scientific Medical Education Committee,

<<25>> and we are really excited to be here today

<<27>> because we are gonna be talking about the microbiome

<<31>> and two supporting doTERRA products,

<<34>> PB Restore and PB Assist+.

<<37>> So, Alexandra, we hear a lot and especially recently

<<41>> around the microbiome, but can you help explain to me

<<46>> and to us what that means, what it is?

<<49>> In order to understand the microbiome,

<<52>> imagine the microbiome as a big,

<<56>> bustling city with a lot of tiny little citizens

<<61>> called microbes, viruses, fungi,

<<65>> and they live there together in communities

<<68>> and balance and harmony.

<<70>> And they have different challenges

<<72>> and they have different jobs to do,

<<75>> and they live all over us.

<<78>> So we have them in our gut, for example.

<<81>> We have them all over our skin.

<<84>> We have them in the female reproductive system,

<<87>> and we have them also in our lungs.

<<90>> And they have different challenges there,

<<92>> but the most important thing,

<<94>> they are doing, is protecting us.

<<96>> And if they live in harmony,

<<98>> then we have a healthy microbiome.

<<102>> And if they're getting out of balance,

<<104>> then some of them could harm us.

<<107>> And how does the microbiome interact with our bodies?

<<111>> The microbiome is interacting

<<113>> all the time with our bodies.

<<116>> For example, it's communicating all the time

<<119>> with our immune system, and this is so important

<<123>> because over 70% of our immune system is in our gut.

<<127>> And there we also have a really big city,

<<131>> so a really big microbiome,

<<133>> and this communication is so important

<<135>> for overall health and for a healthy immune system.

<<140>> It's also supporting our metabolism.

<<144>> It's also supporting our sleep system.

<<149>> It's helping us have a good mood or a good behaviour.

<<154>> And it depends where the microbiome is.

<<156>> So for example, the microbiome in the gut

<<160>> is more there also for digesting food

<<163>> or there for absorbing nutrients,

<<167>> and the microbiome on our skin is more

<<170>> for protecting us from strangers from outside

<<174>> because our skin is a natural barrier.

<<178>> It's our biggest organ we have,

<<180>> protecting us from all the pathogens outside,

<<184>> and a healthy microbiome on our skin leads to healthy skin

<<188>> and also to a healthy barrier.

<<191>> And yeah, and that's so,

<<192>> on depending on where our microbiome is, this overall health

<<196>> is the most important thing,

<<197>> what we have in the communication

<<199>> with our microbiome and our bodies.

<<202>> So it sounds like they've got

<<203>> a pretty important job to play.

<<205>> - They have. Yeah.

<<207>> - So Fernando, can you talk us through

<<210>> some lifestyle habits

<<213>> that would support a healthy microbiome

<<216>> or potentially negatively impact our microbiome?

<<220>> So, the importance of our microbiome is the variety.

<<224>> - Okay.

<<225>> The variety of species.

<<226>> Like Alexandra said,

<<227>> we have lots of species that live there

<<232>> and commune and do the jobs for our body,

<<236>> help us to produce certain vitamins and other substances

<<241>> that are important for us.

<<243>> And one of the most important

<<248>> factors that can help that microbiome is diet.

<<253>> Have a healthy diet.

<<255>> Another is movement,

<<258>> activity, sport.

<<260>> There's a lot of studies that say

<<262>> that if you do more exercise,

<<265>> you increase the number of more species

<<270>> that live in your gut and they're more healthy.

<<272>> So if those communities are more healthy,

<<275>> we are more healthy.

<<276>> So, for example, if you don't do exercise,

<<281>> if you have a heavy toxic load,

<<284>> exposed to the bad things that we are exposed every day,

<<288>> sometimes we don't feel it immediately,

<<290>> but on the long way we will feel it.

<<292>> That's really interesting, 'cause as the topic

<<294>> of microbiome has become more popular,

<<296>> I think we've all heard that having that variety

<<299>> of plants and food in your diet,

<<301>> but interesting that those extra lifestyle habits,

<<304>> like exercise, reducing your toxic load,

<<307>> also has a big impact

<<309>> on the health as well. Just on the health chart

<<311>> that we have in doTERRA.

<<312>> - Yeah, sounds like it.

<<313>> Yeah.

<<313>> Alexandra, what happens when we don't have

<<316>> a healthy microbiome?

<<318>> - Yeah, so when the little citizens get in trouble

<<321>> because they have war or they have disharmony there

<<325>> getting out of balance,

<<327>> then this could cause an unhealthy microbiome,

<<331>> and this can lead to different issues.

<<333>> If you talk about our gut, then we could have problems

<<337>> within our digestion.

<<339>> So, this can lead to symptoms like diarrhea

<<343>> or constipation

<<345>> or bloating

<<347>> or IBS or IBD.

<<349>> If we have problems with our microbiome on our skin,

<<354>> then this can lead to different infections.

<<357>> This can lead to issues like acne and psoriasis.

<<362>> So, it's so important,

<<363>> we can't give every fault to our microbiome,

<<366>> but if our microbiome is not in balance, we have issue,

<<372>> and we don't connect this to our microbiome.

<<374>> So we see maybe only on our skin something,

<<377>> but the problem is not the skin.

<<379>> It is the microbiome.

<<382>> With the gut, it's easier because we know

<<384>> that we have a microbiome in our gut

<<386>> and when we have a problem with our digestion,

<<388>> so we think about that it could be the microbiome.

<<392>> But I think it's important to have a closer look

<<396>> on our microbiome because of these big challenges

<<400>> and the big jobs they have to do.

<<403>> And if we are protecting it and helping the citizens

<<407>> to have more harmony in their community,

<<409>> then this is the best for us.

<<412>> Another thing important is also that community,

<<416>> that huge city that lives in all of our body.

<<420>> If there's imbalance, for instance,

<<423>> if you had any condition, if you need to take

<<426>> a certain type of medicine in that particular time,

<<430>> that can unbalance that.

<<432>> So, there's a lot of guidelines that says

<<435>> when you prescribe as a doctor,

<<436>> we prescribe a certain type of medicine,

<<439>> you should provide probiotics

<<442>> because that medicine can alter that community,

<<446>> and in the long run will make another type of issues.

<<451>> Don't forget one thing.

<<452>> There's a lot of risk factor for some conditions

<<456>> that are related with the microbiome.

<<461>> For instance, if there's a cesarean or a normal delivery.

<<468>> If you're breastfeeding your child or not.

<<472>> So those risks, those positions since the baby time

<<477>> will just give you all the support or not,

<<481>> have more risk or not to acquire some conditions.

<<485>> So it's important, the microbiome,

<<487>> because when we're born, we don't have that much,

<<491>> we're not so much colonised,

<<493>> but with time will be colonised,

<<495>> and that will help us in our gut,

<<497>> in our respiratory system, in our mouth,

<<500>> in all of our organs that are exposed to the exterior,

<<504>> and they are exposed to every type of microbiome,

<<509>> of microbes that are in our environment

<<513>> and can be good or bad for.

<<515>> And if we talk about a healthy microbiome

<<517>> and we talk about all the benefits,

<<519>> like having a good behaviour or having a good sleep,

<<523>> then it's totally logical

<<525>> that if we have an unhealthy microbiome,

<<527>> that the opposite can happen.

<<529>> So, it can lead to a restless night,

<<533>> it can lead to a bad mood.

<<535>> It can also lead to things

<<537>> like anxiety or depression.

<<540>> You mentioned so nicely our Wellness Chart.

<<542>> That inside, our Wellness Chart can topple

<<547>> if we have an unbalanced microbiome.

<<549>> Yeah, and if you see every day,

<<552>> all the papers that are coming out all the time,

<<556>> they show the importance of the microbiome

<<560>> and the importance of taking probiotics.

<<564>> And the thing is, is the type of probiotics and the quality.

<<568>> That's what we are here to talk about,

<<571>> because not everything is the best.

<<575>> Not only the best species are good for us.

<<578>> - I think the topic of microbiome is fascinating,

<<582>> and there's a reason why it's become such a big topic

<<586>> that we've seen so many studies come through.

<<588>> We've seen so much information come through,

<<591>> and hearing you Alexandra talk about it,

<<593>> as this community that lives on your skin and in your body

<<596>> and all of these different citizens that are at play

<<599>> and the different effects that it can show

<<602>> if you do have that imbalance

<<604>> and unhealthy microbiome in your body.

<<607>> So Fernando, could you tell us

<<611>> what makes our PB Restore product so unique?

<<615>> - This product is so unique

<<618>> because of the mechanism of delivery.

<<621>> We have on this product the prebiotics,

<<625>> the probiotics, and the postbiotics.

<<627>> The prebiotics helps the probiotics to live,

<<631>> they are their food.

<<633>> And the postbiotics are some elements that are produced

<<636>> by the probiotics to help the body.

<<639>> That capsule has a double layer.

<<642>> When you take it, it will be delivered in the gut

<<645>> at the precise time.

<<647>> Because when you take your pill, it will go to the stomach.

<<652>> The stomach is very acidic and mostly destroys everything,

<<656>> and that double layer capsule gives protection

<<660>> to that capsule, to those bacterias

<<663>> that we want to repopulate to help the microbiome

<<667>> will be delivered in the right place

<<669>> in the right conditions, in the right number.

<<673>> Because sometimes we just see capsules

<<675>> with probiotics selling everywhere

<<678>> with a really big amount of CFUs,

<<682>> which is the number of colonies.

<<685>> And at the end, at delivery time, there's not that much

<<691>> like we have.

<<693>> We certify that the number of bacterias

<<696>> that are good for our microbiome are delivered

<<699>> on the number that we presented.

<<702>> And that's able to be achieved because of that-

<<705>> Yeah, that technology delivery system is really key.

<<711>> 'Cause you cannot, if you don't have this type of system,

<<715>> it's difficult for you to deliver the amount that you need.

<<718>> That makes sense. Yeah.

<<719>> - So, Fernando, can you help explain to me

<<723>> the differences between PB Assist+ and PB Restore?

<<727>> Of course.

<<728>> So, PB Assist+ is a powder, a sachet with a powder,

<<733>> and each grain is micro encapsulated.

<<736>> So, it's the system, the delivery, on the right spot.

<<740>> So, this product has strains that are used for our gut,

<<745>> for our gut microbiome.

<<747>> And the PB Restore is, like I said, a double layer capsule

<<751>> that also is placed and opens in the right spot in the gut.

<<756>> The difference in terms of strains is, like I said,

<<760>> the PB Assist+ is more for the gut,

<<763>> but PB Restore can be used

<<767>> across all broad species.

<<768>> Not only for the gut, but also for the skin,

<<771>> for respiratory tract and genitourinary tract.

<<775>> So, it gives you a full amount of species

<<778>> that can help your microbiome.

<<780>> And am I right in saying that PB Restore

<<782>> has 28 strains?

<<784>> And PB Assist+ has 13?

<<787>> Correct.

<<787>> And they're both different?

<<790>> Yeah, they're different. So they offer

<<791>> those different strains.

<<792>> So if I take both, I would receive

<<795>> that variety that we need to support our healthy microbiome

<<800>> and give us that great community

<<803>> that you've both explained so well as well?

<<806>> So Alexandra, what are the benefits

<<807>> of being able to use both of these products together?

<<811>> - So yes, you can choose the product,

<<815>> that you would like to have depending

<<819>> on your habits or also on your issues.

<<823>> So, the combination is interesting

<<827>> because if we would like to support our microbiome

<<830>> in a different way, so if we would like to support

<<833>> not only the microbiome in our gut but also in our lungs,

<<837>> in our skin or on our skin and in other places in our body,

<<841>> then the combination could be a really great support.

<<846>> But if we say, "Okay, I would only like to take

<<851>> PB Assist because I would like to support my gut,

<<855>> on a daily basis, but I have no problems with my lifestyle

<<861>> and with my habits," then I think

<<863>> PB Assist could be enough.

<<865>> But sometimes we have challenges in our life

<<867>> and we can feel that.

<<869>> And maybe now the people know that if they have issues

<<872>> like a restless sleep or problems with their mood

<<875>> or also a stressy life or a problem with digestion,

<<880>> then they know, "Okay, maybe now in my life,

<<883>> I need a little bit more support,

<<885>> or maybe I need to support overall health."

<<888>> And for that, I think a combination

<<891>> is a really a great opportunity

<<894>> for the people to support the microbiome

<<897>> in such a different way and then such a

<<901>> way full of variety.

<<904>> Absolutely.

<<905>> And Fernando, how would you recommend

<<906>> using the two products?

<<908>> It's really easy.

<<909>> It's a capsule.

<<910>> The PB Restore is a capsule that you can use it.

<<913>> I recommend take it at lunch for instance.

<<915>> 'Cause you will take time when you take the pill.

<<918>> It goes to the stomach and then to the gut to open,

<<921>> so it takes time.

<<922>> Why don't you take it at dinner?

<<924>> Because you're going to take your dinner.

<<926>> Then after a couple hours you're going to sleep.

<<929>> So when you go to sleep,

<<931>> the velocity of the movement of your gut

<<935>> will be slower,

<<937>> so it will not deliver the amount that we need

<<940>> so the product will not function as we want it.

<<943>> So it's better to take in the early hour.

<<946>> PB Assist+, you can take with all the family.

<<950>> In a smoothie, with some fruits.

<<953>> Of course you need take into account

<<957>> temperature, environment temperature or cold temperature

<<960>> because we are dealing with living microorganisms,

<<964>> so you don't want to kill it.

<<965>> So it will be a waste,

<<968>> and that's important.

<<971>> - So don't add it to any hot drinks?

<<973>> Please don't. Or anything like that?

<<974>> Please don't. Okay, noted, noted.

<<976>> But you've mentioned that that's family friendly as well,

<<979>> which I think is great, and it's something

<<981>> that we can take directly from the sachet.

<<983>> - Yeah, you can take

<<984>> directly. So it's really easy.

<<985>> You can put it in a smoothie.

<<987>> What I recommend on the beginning,

<<988>> because you are taking a lot of,

<<992>> a great amount of bacterias for your gut,

<<995>> you can start with a half sachet at the first days,

<<998>> and then you can go with the full sachet.

<<1001>> So after four years old, for PB Assist+, you can use it,

<<1005>> or even younger.

<<1006>> There's no big issue.

<<1008>> If you mix it

<<1009>> with baby food it will be great.

<<1014>> It will help a lot with the gut.

<<1015>> Because I deal with kids every day.

<<1018>> I work with kids every day, and gut issues

<<1021>> are great issues for the parents.

<<1024>> The bloating, and sometimes

<<1028>> we don't know why they are crying,

<<1029>> and sometimes they're in pain

<<1031>> 'cause the microbiome are still growing.

<<1035>> They are building the city there.

<<1037>> So, like we have a city with buildings,

<<1039>> yeah, yeah, it's problematic in that time.

<<1042>> - Theirs is still in construction.

<<1043>> Yeah, so it's important

<<1045>> to just give them this product.

<<1048>> That's great. It's great.

<<1050>> - And one thing I wanted to mention as well

<<1051>> is as we've had this discussion,

<<1053>> we've spoken a lot about probiotics throughout this,

<<1056>> and I think one thing that's important to note

<<1058>> is that in Europe and as part of our,

<<1062>> what you'll see on the packaging for PB Restore

<<1064>> and PB Assist is not probiotics.

<<1067>> We say live bacterial cultures.

<<1070>> It means the same thing.

<<1072>> It's just slightly different for Europe

<<1073>> as it is in other countries as well.

<<1076>> But thank you both very much

<<1077>> for your time today. Thank you so much.

<<1078>> It's been great chatting with you.

<<1150>> with our microbiome and our bodies.

<<1151>> - Wow.
