<<22>> so
<<25>> [Music]
<<45>> there are 18 tribes scattered across our
<<47>> island
<<48>> we all call ourselves malagasy but our
<<51>> customs and way of life vary from place
<<53>> to place
<<54>> here in mananzari we are members of the
<<56>> atamba orca tribe the smallest drive in
<<59>> madagascar
<<68>> the ocean is our lifeblood here in
<<70>> mananzari
<<71>> we rely on the water for everything
<<74>> from fishing and hunting to plant
<<76>> cultivation
<<78>> we are surrounded on one side by salt
<<80>> water and fresh water on the other
<<86>> some of our largest exports are coffee
<<88>> vanilla and a variety of essential oil
<<91>> crops like vetiver cinnamon and gloves
<<97>> [Music]
<<104>> there are two large exporters here and
<<107>> countless farmers running there on small
<<109>> distilleries
<<111>> in this area alone there are more than
<<114>> 80 small scale distillers
<<154>> my name
<<159>> [Music]
<<161>> i've been a farmer here in mananzari for
<<163>> seven years now my wife rosine and i
<<166>> moved here after getting married and we
<<168>> began farming coffee and rice
<<183>> we have a simple life here on the
<<185>> outskirts of manazar
<<186>> each morning claudius feeds the chickens
<<189>> and prepares our tools we'll light fetch
<<191>> water and cook breakfast
<<194>> [Music]
<<199>> we live in a small community of close
<<201>> family
<<202>> where we all take care of each other
<<206>> [Music]
<<219>> we have a young son named claudio he's 7
<<222>> years old
<<224>> he always says that he wants to be a
<<226>> doctor when he grows up
<<230>> claudio's education is very important to
<<232>> us up until a few years ago we were
<<235>> still only planting coffee and rice but
<<237>> that wasn't enough
<<239>> we started planting clove trees which
<<241>> provided an additional income we could
<<243>> use to send claudio to school
<<250>> there are no doctors this far away from
<<252>> the city if someone needs to visit the
<<255>> doctor it can be difficult to find
<<257>> transportation we hope that by sending
<<259>> claudio to school he will someday have
<<261>> the opportunity to open a clinic in our
<<264>> area
<<266>> [Music]
<<280>> what
<<291>> planting clove isn't enough to make us
<<293>> rich
<<294>> but he does get closer his education and
<<297>> also allows us to save for the future
<<299>> [Music]
<<304>> many farmers live far outside of the
<<306>> city and it's hard for them to transport
<<308>> their product to the market where they
<<309>> can be sold because of this we've seen
<<312>> traders begin to appear in mananzad men
<<315>> who travel from farmer to farmer buying
<<317>> out their stock and taking it to the
<<318>> market
<<320>> middle men are at the biggest challenge
<<322>> a trader might go to a farmer and buy
<<325>> out his stock of glove then sell it in
<<327>> the city market for double the buying
<<329>> price
<<330>> if the farmer doesn't sell
<<332>> he risks his supplies polling so he is
<<335>> forced to make a deal
<<337>> using some basic chemistry a trader can
<<340>> pat their profits even further
<<345>> for a trader it can be immensely
<<347>> profitable to adulterate an essential
<<349>> oil
<<350>> when it comes to clove for example
<<352>> there are three parts of the plant from
<<354>> which oil is acquired
<<356>> the stem
<<357>> the leaf and the bud
<<359>> all three oils contain the same chemical
<<362>> compounds but the amounts of each
<<364>> compound vary from one oil to another
<<370>> eugenol acetate is a distinguishing
<<372>> compound in clove bud
<<375>> essential oil derived from the bud is
<<377>> naturally the most valuable
<<379>> being worth double the closed stem and
<<381>> quadruple the clothed leaf
<<386>> to some buyers high quality oil isn't a
<<389>> priority
<<390>> in that kind of scenario they may seek
<<392>> out a cheaper clove oil
<<395>> the real problem comes when a customer
<<397>> asks for one thing and is given another
<<402>> there's little access to chemical
<<404>> testing equipment madagascar so
<<406>> international buyers often don't know if
<<408>> their essential oils are pure until
<<410>> they're personally tested
<<413>> there are many ways to mix oils to
<<415>> increase profits
<<417>> one method commonly used is adding
<<420>> synthetic eugenol acetate directly to
<<422>> clove leaf and clove stem in an attempt
<<425>> to mirror the composition of clove bud
<<428>> to even a sophisticated lab it will look
<<430>> like clove part oil
<<432>> the difference between pure and
<<434>> synthetic is almost undetectable
<<445>> naturally most sellers claim their oils
<<447>> are pure and it would be difficult to
<<449>> prove them wrong
<<451>> to give our buyers confidence in the oil
<<453>> we produce we ship our essential oils to
<<455>> one of the only labs on the island in
<<457>> antananarivo our nation's capital
<<465>> the tests we run in this lab are not
<<467>> comprehensive but it gives our buyers
<<469>> some base levels to go off of
<<479>> [Music]
<<480>> when essentials arrive here at doterra
<<483>> we do a series of tests to confirm the
<<485>> purity of the earth at the quality
<<487>> control lab we use an extensive protocol
<<489>> to ensure the purity one of the most
<<492>> common tools in the industry is the gcms
<<494>> which is used to identify each
<<496>> individual chemical compound present in
<<499>> the oils it shows the natural
<<501>> composition of the ore and we also use
<<503>> it to check for adulteration and
<<505>> contamination with chemicals that are
<<507>> not naturally present in the oils gcms
<<510>> by itself is not enough to ensure purity
<<513>> this is where adotera we have additional
<<515>> testing that looks at organoleptic and
<<517>> physical properties of the oils the last
<<519>> thing we do is to make sure the oils are
<<521>> free of contaminants such as heavy
<<523>> metals pesticides and microorganisms
<<525>> because our sourcing team works closely
<<528>> with our suppliers and quality is
<<530>> ensured at the source we rarely see
<<533>> adulteration
<<543>> [Music]
<<552>> these farmers are the heart of the
<<554>> essential oil industry
<<559>> and when oil adulteration happens it not
<<562>> only cheats consumers from receiving the
<<564>> pure oil they expect
<<566>> but also these farmers that work so hard
<<569>> to produce it
<<582>> you
