<<2>> No one has really discovered the benefits of the Copaiba until now,
<<6>> although it's been historical used.
<<8>> We are now actually really starting to understand the science behind
<<11>> this and I think that the benefits of this oil are completely untapped.
<<17>> We had to wait until after January as the waters came up
<<20>> so that we could access the trees.
<<22>> So their main collection season is
<<24>> between January and June when the water is high.
<<27>> So now we're going to go up and see the Copaiba trees firsthand
<<31>> and see how they collect the resin.
<<38>> The way the oil is extracted, it's an oleoresin,
<<40>> is that the tree is tapped like you would a maple tree
<<43>> and as that tree is stressed, the olio resin then is
<<46>> called to the source of where it's been stressed.
<<49>> Then we're able to extract that oil which will run year round.
<<59>> We're about an hour and a half as he's drilled
<<62>> through the tree to collect just this much oil.
<<65>> It helps you understand how much work goes into collecting this oil
<<69>> and after this is distilled, it's about 50% yield,
<<72>> so we'll get about half as much oil,
<<75>> and then he'll come back to this tree six months later and
<<78>> he'll be able to get about a liter worth of resin from this tree.
<<84>> Copaiba oil, it really has kind of hit the scientific community
<<88>> like a shooting star and we didn't really understand what was so neat
<<92>> about it until the research started coming in about beta-caryophyllene.
<<95>> So the way that we understand it, the phytocannabinoids,
<<99>> so the beta-caryophyllene in this case, comes in
<<102>> and interacts with a receptor on the cell surface.
<<106>> Think of your windows on your house, right?
<<107>> You're getting things that are interacting with your window
<<110>> and it changes what you do inside your house.
<<112>> You don't actually come in contact with it, but it changes what you do.
<<115>> If you see rain on your window, you pick up an umbrella,
<<118>> you wear a different outfit that day,
<<120>> so it's that same kind of idea.
<<122>> We're having things that are interacting with the surface of the cell
<<125>> that are changing things that are happening inside the cell.
<<128>> There's a cascade, there's this chain reaction of things
<<132>> that happens once that receptor gets activated,
<<137>> and other molecules inside the cell start to get excited and
<<140>> they start to change and they start to interact with other things
<<143>> and eventually what happens is, the DNA inside of our nucleus
<<147>> actually goes to work and different genes are
<<150>> up-regulated or down-regulated. Other signaling
<<153>> molecules are either increased in amount or decreased in amount.
<<158>> In the end product, what we're looking for,
<<161>> is we want exactly what we find in the plant,
<<164>> and that comes with a lot of time and a lot of experience
<<167>> and understanding the plant materials that you're working with,
<<170>> and even the uniqueness of the chemistry,
<<173>> whether we have dominant compounds or whether we have
<<176>> more subtle compounds of chemistry within the oil.
<<178>> Each one of them plays an important role in the value
<<182>> of the overall constitution of the oil and
<<184>> the benefits that we can expect to have from that oil.
<<187>> One thing that is unique about our Copaiba essential oil
<<190>> is that we're using four different species from the copaifera trees.
<<195>> This makes a very complete profile where you see maybe other
<<198>> Copaiba that is offered and it's just simply a fraction,
<<201>> which is just a part of all of the components that
<<204>> are available through the different species,
<<207>> where we're using all four.
