<<0>> - When I was growing up we worked seven days a week.
<<3>> Didn't make any difference what day of the week it was,
<<5>> why it was a work day.
<<7>> - My first memory as a farmer as a kid were driving combine
<<10>> soon as school was out I was headed home to the farm.
<<17>> - I grew up here, so I was born on the farm.
<<20>> I grew up just in the house next door.
<<23>> When I was growing up we worked seven days a week.
<<26>> You'd go back to school in the fall and the teacher always
<<29>> wanted you to write your first paper of
<<32>> what did you do this summer?
<<33>> I didn't have to write very much, I was just like, work.
<<35>> Worked every day and that's just the way it was.
<<39>> - [Man] My dad got started farming when he was a senior in
<<41>> high school, he was renting about 150 acres and just kind of
<<45>> started farming from there, ended up going into venture
<<48>> with some peppermint.
<<55>> - The reason it's such an honor for us to work with the
<<58>> Brown family is because they take such pride
<<60>> in what they do, they love growing peppermint,
<<63>> they love harvesting peppermint.
<<65>> You look at this distillery,
<<66>> this is a state of the art distillery,
<<68>> you won't find anything like this
<<69>> anywhere else in the world.
<<72>> - Soon as the trucks start bringing in the tubs
<<75>> we just watch for when they're gonna hook 'um up and
<<78>> make sure they get the steam going.
<<80>> When the steam comes up to pressure we've got different
<<82>> buttons here to regulate the steam and it's just a lot
<<87>> of pacing back and forth in here watching 16 different
<<90>> bays and making sure it happens right.
<<93>> - This year we're harvesting 520 acres of peppermint
<<96>> and we're gonna plan on doing that in eight and a half days.
<<99>> We're cooking right now about 102 to 103 tubs a day.
<<104>> The Willamette Valley tends to have have a more oil
<<107>> that's more sought after than other places in United States
<<110>> or around the world and a lot of it just has to do with
<<112>> the climatic conditions here.
<<114>> When the plant starts to bloom the quality of the oil
<<116>> starts to change, you don't want to end up with oil that's
<<119>> not of the consistency that the consumer wants.
<<122>> Although we could get more oil by letting the plant
<<125>> get more mature, there's a certain time in there when
<<128>> we have the best quality for the maturity.
<<130>> - Because of the care they put into their fields
<<132>> in making sure they're free of weeds,
<<134>> we get the finest peppermint in the world.
<<137>> - We want to be the best in whatever it is that we're doing
<<141>> so I love it when the wellness advocates come to visit
<<145>> our mint still, it's such a emotional experience to me,
<<150>> to be able to talk about something that we are so passionate
<<154>> about, to see the impact of our efforts, of our hard work
<<159>> through the stories that are then told to us.
<<161>> I know it means a lot to them and when they share with
<<164>> others about peppermint oil, they know exactly where it
<<169>> came from and they can be even a stronger advocate
<<172>> for the use of peppermint oil.
<<175>> And you think wow, we really are making a difference.
